Popular Brazilian Portuguese through capoeira: from local to global

The present study examines the process of globalization popular Brazilian Portuguese (PBP) through spreading capoeira outside Brazil. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in New York City and eight years practice, my objective is to demonstrate that PBP variety exported abroad by practitioners, non-Brazilian ones are learning this non-standard as essential their identity a community practice. Consequently, being detached from language ideologies related lower social classes originating Brazil during colonial times, but still attached national resistance blacks slavery. In demonstrating how use extends beyond non-elites also include an international community, I argue currently linked other forms symbolic capital virtue its increasing globalizing contexts.
